Difference Between Worsted and Woolen Yarns

I have been playing with yarns and wool just about all my life and could never quite get what the difference was between worsted and woolen yarns. Well maybe I will finally get it now and hope you do too.

You might have come across these various terms and wondered yourself what they meant: worsted yarn or wool, worsted weight yarn, carding, wool or card wool, wool combing. The variations of these terms are quite endless. No wonder I have been so confused before!

Worsted Yarns Woolen Yarns
  • long staple length (4 or more inch long fibers)
  • are carded and combed during its production
  • have a tight twist in spinning
  • stronger, finer, smoother, more even fibers
  • has a flatter, smoother finish
  • harder
  • distinct closely wowen pattern
  • longer-lasting with less wrinkles
  • holds shape better
  • more expensive
  • good for tailored clothing and suits
  • shorter staple lengths (1 to 4 inch long fibers)
  • carded only during its production
  • have a slack twist
  • weaker yarn
  • bulkier but softer
  • less obvious pattern in yarn
  • soft finish - soft, thick, and fuzzy
  • warmer
  • stains can be more easily removed
  • usually less expensive
  • good for jumpers, blankets
